                                           반대자를 중시하라

 

반대는 필수적이다. 훌륭한 정치가는, 다른 이성적 인간처럼, 항상 자기를 열렬히 지지하는 사람으로부터보다 반대자로부터 더 많은 것을 배운다. 이유인즉 반대자들이 어디에 위험에 놓여있는지를 그에게 알려주지 않으면, 그의 지지자들이 그를 커다란 불행으로 밀고 갈 것이기 때문이다. 그러므로 정치가가 현명하다면, 그는 자주 자기 친구들로부터 구원되기를 간구할 것인데 왜냐하면 친구들이 그를 파멸시키는 경향이 있기 때문이다. 그러나 아플지라도, 정치가는 반대자가 없지 않게 해달라고 간구하여야 한다. 이유인즉 반대자들이 그를 이성과 훌륭한 판단의 길로 지켜 주기 때문이다.

The opposition is indispensable. A good statesman, like any other sensible human being, always learns more from his opponents than from his fervent supporters. For his supporters will push him to disaster unless his opponents show him where the dangers are. So if he is wise he will often pray to be delivered from his friends, because they will ruin him. But, though it hurts, he ought also to pray never to be left without opponents; for they keep him on the path of reason and good sense.
