                       도덕적 기틀이나 법률적 기틀이 무너지면

 

우리가 가장 중요한 것으로서 간주해야 하는 전통들 가운데는 소위 사회의 ‘도덕적 기틀’이라는 (제도적인 ‘법률적 기틀’과 상응하는) 것이 있다. 이것에 의하여 전통적 정의감(正義感)이나 공정성 의식, 혹은 사회가 도달한 도덕적 감수성의 정도(程度)가 구체화된다. 이 도덕적 구조물은, 이것이 필요한 곳에서 상충하는 이해관계들 사이에서 공정하거나 공평한 타협에 이르는 것을 가능하게 만드는 토대로서 작동한다. 물론 그 구조물 자체가 변화될 수 없는 것이 아니지만 비교적 서서히 변화한다. 나치주의에 의하여 의도적으로 목표물이 되었던 바와 같이, 이 전통적 구조물의 파괴보다 더 위험한 것은 있을 수 없을 터이다. 종국적으로 그 구조물의 파괴로 인하여 냉소주의와 허무주의 즉, 모든 인간적 가치들의 무시와 해체가 발생할 것이다.

Among the traditions we must count as the most important is what we may call the 'moral framework' (corresponding to the institutional 'legal framework') of a society. This incorporates the society's traditional sense of justice or fairness, or the degree of moral sensitivity it has reached. This moral framework serves as the basis which makes it possible to reach a fair or equitable compromise between conflicting interests where this is necessary. It is, of course, itself not unchangeable, but it changes comparatively slowly. Nothing is more dangerous than the destruction of this traditional framework, as it was consciously aimed at by Nazism. In the end its destruction will lead to cynicism and nihilism, i.e. to the disregard and the dissolution of all human values.
