슬픔 소멸

 

지나온 세월

다가올 시간

알 수 없어라.

 

태어난 까닭

말할 수 있어도

어디로 가는지

말하지 못하며

긴 밤 지난다.

 

공간 사라진 곳에서

시간 마침내 휘고

슬픔 소멸한다.

 

후기:

ㅡ 지구상에서 사람의 현재 삶을, 우리가 알지 못하는 저 시간과 비교할 때 참새 한 마리가 겨울날 연회장을 통과하는 빠른 비상(飛翔)처럼 느껴지오.

위안의 몇 순간이 지나고 사람은 시야에서 사라져 자신이 나왔던 추운 세상 속으로 사라지오. 그렇기는 하지만 사람은 세상에 잠시 나타나오; 그러나 이 생애 앞에 지나간 것과 무엇이 뒤따를지 우리는 알지 못하오.

지난 며칠 동안 나는 상실에 대하여 많이 생각했다. 공(公), 사람에게 가장 회복 불가능한 상실은 무엇이오?

ㅡ 사람의 미덕이지요.

ㅡ 아니오, 왜냐하면 사람의 행동을 통하여 사람은 미덕을 회복할 수 있으니까.

ㅡ 그렇다면 사람의 명예지요.

ㅡ 아니오, 왜냐하면 또 사람이 잃어버린 재산을 되찾는 것처럼 사람은 명예를 되찾는 수단을 발견할 것이니까.

ㅡ 그렇다면 나는 알 수 없습니다, 폐하.

ㅡ 시간이오, 공(公). 모든 상실 중에서 시간이 가장 되찾을 수 없는데 시간이란 회복되지 않소.

ㅡ When we compare the present life of man on earth with that time of which we have no knowledge, it seems to me like the swift flight of a single sparrow through banqueting hall on a winter's day.

After a few moments of comfort, he vanishes from sight into the wintry world from which he came. Even so, man appears on earth for a little while; but of what went before this life or what will follow, we know nothing.

In these last days I have been thinking a great deal about loss. What loss, Your Grace, is to man the most irrecoverable?

ㅡ His virtue.

ㅡ No. For by his actions, he may redeem his virtue.

ㅡ Then his honour.

ㅡ No. For again, he may find the means to recover it, even as a man recovers some fortune he has lost.

ㅡ Then I cannot say, Your Majesty.

ㅡ Time, Your Grace. Of all losses, time is the most irrecuperable, for it can never be redeemed.
