                                       독서 하면서 해석하는 두 가지 방법

 

사람들은 자신들이 듣기를 기대하는 것을 들을 뿐 아니라 자신들이 읽기를 기대한 것을 읽기만 하기도 한다. 그리고 우리 이론들의 도움을 받아서만 사물들을 우리가 이해할 수 있다고 내가 항상 말하기 때문에 나는 이 사실에 대하여 불평해서는 안 된다. 틀림없이 독서 하면서 해석하는 두 가지 가능한 방식이 있다: 독자는 자신의 해석들을 향하여 무비판적이거나 비판적일 것이다. 그럼에도 불구하고 독자들이 자기들이 읽고 있는 것에 대한 자신들의 해석들과 기대들을 습관적으로 반증하려고 노력하는 시간과 장소가 저술가의 꿈속에서만 존재하는 것을 나는 우려한다.

People not only hear what they expect to hear but they only read what they expect to read. And since I always say that we can grasp things only with the help of our theories, I should be the last to complain about this fact.
